The second one. And it wasn't a close call.

If you ask me, the most professional sentence in B2B supply is: "This isn't our area—let me point you to someone who does it right."

How I Learned This the Expensive Way

I didn't always believe this. I used to think loyalty meant giving your regular supplier a chance at every order. I only stopped after the summer of 2023, when a "compatible" ice machine part cost me $1,200 in redo work and a weekend of emergency repairs.

People assume choosing a specialist means limiting your options. I think that's completely backwards. A specialist has done the same job dozens of times and knows the edge cases. They've seen the failure modes. They're not cross-referencing part numbers by guesswork.

We're upgrading the 777's swing gear later this year, and I'm buying exclusively through the authorized dealer, because the OEM parts diagram is the only document that tells us which gear tooth profile matches which serial number range. A generalist can "source it" from somewhere. The specialist already has it in a bin, labeled, verified, traceable.

That traceability isn't bureaucracy. It's risk management. When you're lifting tens of thousands of pounds, the load chart isn't a suggestion. ASME B30.5, the standard that governs mobile and locomotive cranes in North America, requires operators to verify the exact configuration before every lift using the manufacturer's published load chart. That process demands certainty about every pin and every seal. "Compatible" doesn't appear anywhere in that standard. Neither does "should probably work."

The Hidden Costs That Never Show Up on Quotes

Here's the part that matters for your budget. Over 48 orders in our procurement system across two years, we tracked two vendor types: generalists who said "we can handle everything" and specialists who stuck to their lane.

The generalists averaged 9% lower base prices. Their total final cost averaged 14% higher. That gap never showed up in the original quote. It came from:

  • Wrong parts shipped, then restocking fees applied when we returned them
  • Expedite fees because the right part wasn't actually in their warehouse

A specialist would have caught that mismatch before shipping. They'd have asked which lug configuration, which revision, which serial number range. That question costs fifteen seconds. It would have saved us a two-day teardown and reassembly.

If They Can Do Everything, They Probably Can't Do Everything

Here's a red flag I've learned to spot: the supplier who says yes to everything—drill presses, ice machines, crawler cranes, hydraulic filters, oven elements, you name it. What they're really telling you, whether they know it or not, is that they haven't hit their own limits yet. When they finally find that boundary mid-project, you'll be the one paying for the discovery.

I've had this exact conversation at industry meetups, including the regular gatherings at Crane Club NYC. Someone's always got a story about the vendor who promised the world and delivered a restocking fee. The pattern is so consistent that I've started reading "we can do that" as a warning sign instead of a reassurance.

We run our own fleet the same way. If a customer asks us to service a crane model we don't know well, we tell them who actually does that repair properly. It costs us a few jobs a year. It saves our reputation and keeps our liability where it belongs—on work we're confident we can do right.

In our industry, saying "we don't do that" is practically a sin. Everyone's terrified to say it, as if admitting a boundary means losing a customer forever. The opposite is true. The supplier who says "we don't do that" is the one I remember when I need something they're actually good at.

So here's my advice, worth exactly what you paid for it. Find the parts dealer who tells you what they don't carry. Trust the crane vendor who says "this machine's load chart doesn't fit your lift plan—here's what does." Work with the people who can say "this isn't our specialty" without flinching.

They're not losing your business by saying no. They're buying your trust with the truth.

And in the long run, that trust is worth a whole lot more than 9% off from the guy who says yes to everything.
