How to Choose a Manitowoc Lattice Boom Crawler Crane: 2250 or a Smaller Model

I coordinate crane rentals and parts orders for a regional contractor in the southern U.S. Since 2021, I've processed roughly 60 equipment orders, 40 of them involving Manitowoc lattice boom crawlers. This isn't a 'buy the biggest' guide. It's a 'how to find the one that fits' guide.

The main mistake I've seen isn't choosing the wrong brand. It's choosing a crane based on one spec sheet number, then ignoring the conditions where the machine will actually work. Why the model decision has no single answer

A lattice boom crawler crane does one thing extraordinarily well: it lifts heavy loads without outriggers and can move around the site with the load suspended. But the range of models in the Manitowoc lineup is wide. There are smaller lattice units designed for utility and mid-size steel work, and there are heavy-class machines like the 2250 that dominate refinery and module jobs.

If you come to me asking 'which one should I get?', my first response is another question: 'what does your next six months of lifts look like?'

The cheapest crane is not the one with the lowest rental sticker. It's the one that completes your project without a second crane showing up.

Scenario 1: Heavy, high-radius lifts

You know you're in this scenario when the load weight is near the top of what a mid-size crawler can do, or when you're working at a radius that forces you up a size class. Refinery turnarounds, wind-turbine component installations, and heavy module placement all tend to live here.

For this work, the Manitowoc 2250 is a familiar option. It's a heavy lattice boom crawler that's been on large-scale projects for decades. I remember a project in 2022 where the engineer kept updating the load list, and each revision pushed the required chart higher. The 2250 absorbed those changes without a full re-plan. A smaller machine would have forced us into rigging compromises.

If I remember correctly, even small counterweight changes on the 2250 shift the load chart by a noticeable margin, so always ask for a project-specific configuration rather than a brochure number. What to watch for if you go this route:

  • Verify the load chart for your exact boom length, counterweight, and track gauge. Configuration changes matter more than the marketing spec.
  • Plan for transport. The 2250 is not a weekly traveler. If the job site requires frequent moves, you'll burn money on trucks and ground-bearing pads.
  • Check dealer support in your region before signing. The 2250 is well supported, but that's only true when there's a Manitowoc parts network within a practical distance.

Scenario 2: Moderate lifts, regular relocation

If your work looks more like bridge girders, steel erection, or industrial maintenance where the heaviest pick is a fraction of the 2250's chart, a smaller lattice boom crawler may give you 80% of the utility at a fraction of the operating cost.

The advantage of a smaller crawler is the ability to self-assemble and move between sites with less logistics. I've handled orders where a contractor moved a mid-size lattice crane between three sites in a single month. The larger machine would have required a week-long transport operation each time.

This is also a good place to ask whether you need a crawler at all. A truck crane might work for some sites. But if the ground is soft, the lifts are repetitive, and you want to walk loads into place, a lattice crawler is the right shape.

I went back and forth on a 2250 versus a mid-size lattice crane for a two-month bridge project. The 2250 gave us reserve chart for future concrete placements. The mid-size kept the monthly bill at a level the finance director could live with. In the end, we chose the mid-size, because the largest lift on the schedule only needed about 65% of its chart. I still remember that decision as one of the few procurement moves I did not regret.

Scenario 3: Short-term work or tight budget

For a four-week rental or a first-time crane purchase, the smart move is to rent if you can, and buy only when you have line-of-sight on two or more projects that need the same machine.

A below-market price in an online auction is tempting. I've seen listings for lattice crawlers that looked great in photos, then the buyer finds out the track pads are worn, the load charts are outdated, and the dealer who can supply genuine Manitowoc parts isn't answering emails. That's when a 'bargain' becomes a $300,000 doorstop (unfortunately).

The upside of buying used is obvious: lower upfront cost. The risk is downtime with no OEM parts pipeline. I keep asking myself, on behalf of our finance team, is the discount worth the potential of a machine sitting idle for three weeks waiting on hydraulic seals?

Maintenance tools: the breaker bar that saves the day

One piece of advice from the admin side of the business: if your crew does any track tensioning or latch-pin work on a lattice crawler, buy a good breaker bar and a set of heavy-duty sockets. The machine's manual often specifies torques that a standard ratchet can't produce.

A team once struggled with a three-foot ratchet on a track adjustment bolt, and the wrench simply didn't have the leverage. A longer breaker bar—or rather, a purpose-built one from a tool supplier who understands heavy equipment—turned a half-hour fight into a five-minute adjustment. That is the kind of efficiency I can justify to accounting without a spreadsheet.

Crew gear: yes, bucket hats show up

Another thing nobody puts in a request list: hats. On outdoor jobs in the summer, operators and riggers ask about bucket hats. Most sites require hard hats, so be sure the bucket hat fits under the hard hat or is compliant with the project's PPE rules.

It sounds minor, but ask anyone who has spent eight hours under direct sun with no neck coverage. Comfort reduces distraction, and distraction is the last thing you want near a moving crane. If a $12 bucket hat keeps the crew focused, it pays for itself.

What is a 'crane shot' anyway?

If you searched for 'what is a crane shot?' and found this page, there's a chance you were looking for the filmmaking term. A crane shot in cinema is a camera move using a mechanical arm or jib. Different equipment, different industry.

In construction, 'crane shot' is not a formal term. Some older rigging documents use 'shot' to mean a single lift or placement cycle. So a superintendent might say, 'We need one more crane shot before lunch,' and they mean one more lift. If you're in the crane rental business, that's the only context you'll need.

How to tell which scenario you're in

If you're still reading, you're probably in the middle of a purchasing or rental decision. Here's a simple self-test:

  • Are your scheduled lifts consistently in the upper range of the crane's chart? → Scenario 1.
  • Is the crane moving between job sites every week or two? → Scenario 2.
  • Is the project duration less than eight weeks or the budget extremely tight? → Scenario 3.

Notice that this classification can overlap. A short project with heavy lifts might mean you rent a 2250 for a month and eat the transport cost. A long project with moderate lifts might mean you buy a mid-size lattice crawler and amortize it over three years.

The point of the scenario exercise is to avoid the two most common mistakes: buying too much crane because the brochure impresses you, and buying too little because the monthly payment scares you. Both mistakes produce the same result—wasted time, wasted money, and a phone call to a parts vendor at a moment when you really didn't want to make one.
